The first (out of three) interviews with Cary Millsap about his new book.

Some of you might know Cary Millsap, a true pioneer in anything concerning performance. We're a few folks around the globe that have worked, and studied, performance for decades. Cary is still the best.  He's written a few books before, but his new book is not just for IT nerdes, database nerds, and other super nerdy people. It's for everyone who'd like to think clearly about performance in all sorts of things happening to you in everyday life. I decided to split up my interviews with Cary in three parts: Before. During. After. This is Before. You can always contact me on mogensxy@gmail.com (private) or mogens@teo.dk (work) with comments, questions or suggestions. I'll answer each and all of you :-). Enjoy. A few cool links involving my dear friend Cary Millsap

Cary Millsap is a titan in the broad field of application performance.... Here's a loooong podcast I did with him a while ago: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6yh2Xbo6Ac2u0jqcx4AogK?si=0OlFWeXORy-SJvj4yUrjJQ Here's his latest blog post (about the ups and downs of the OakTable Network): Cary Millsap: Why the Oak Table Was So Great Here's a link to his first book on performance: Optimizing Oracle Performance [Book] (oreilly.com) Here's his new book: "Faster: How to Optimize a System" · Method R Corporation (method-r.com) Later today/tonight I'll do the first sound tests with Cary, and after that we can start recording a few conversations, and then podcast and blog the results :-). See you. Mogens

Welcome - what is this blog about? Why the weird name?

Welcome. I haven't been blogging for a year or two, but my dear friend Cary Millsap talked me into it yesterday, sort of. A little background: Cary and I are part of a five-person "Junta" that determines who can join a club of performance nerds known as The OakTable Network (named after a big oak table in my kitchen back in 2002). I think we're about 100 members, and Tim Gorman jokingly refers to us as "The Mighty Dames and Knights of the OakTable". All the current members have worked in the Oracle database world, but of course a good portion of us have moved into other areas over the 20 years since the inception of OakTable. So when Cary asked me if we could do a podcast or two about his new book, I thought it was a good way to start blogging again. When I've done a podcast, I can post it here with comments, and spread the word...  So why is the blog called teoryofspeed? Well, I now work for a company called TEO. The Danish word for "theory" i...
